The hobby of homebrewing beer

Dry Hopping With Whole Hops

For the harvest ale, I dry hopped it using my home grown hop cones. I know using whole cones are going to make it difficult to clean out the carboy, but not impossible. For this brew, I wanted to stay true to the concept of the harvest and only use hops that were grown by me.

I transferred the beer from my primary fermentor to a secondary carboy. I kept it in the primary for two weeks. I probably could have dry hopped a week ago but I didn’t get to it until last night.

Anyway, I put the hops in the bottom of my sanitized carboy and I racked the beer on top of them. Here are some photos of the process:

The last time I dry hopped my IPA, I still had a clogging issue in my out tube in my kegs. Does whole hops solve that problem? If so, I will give it a go.

  4. I can’t wait to sample that one.

  5. Hi Chris, I don’t know if whole hops will solve the problem you’re having. I will be bottling this beer, fyi.

  6. looks great. As far as will it help prevent clogging in a keg. yes and no. yes it will IF you don’t transfer any chunks of the hops to the keg. If any chunks get transferred then all bets are off!

  7. I took a sample of this last night. It’s shaping up nicely.

I just bottled my Dirty Blonde last night which is a Sorghum beer. My wife is Gluten intolerant so I wanted to brew a beer that she can enjoy too. After the primary I thought it could stand a hoppier flavor contrast due to the sorghum being bland. I dry hopped about 1 oz. of Golding loose leaf which turned out pretty good. It didn’t seem to clog anything and cleaned up fairly easy. The taste is similar to a Blue Moon but a little back story might be good. I have been making wine for 6 years and I got kind of board or I just didn’t feel challenged anymore. I think beer is pretty cool but I have always felt that beer was above my level. Well the next beer I have which will be ready for bottling next week is my Gluten free Double Chocolate Oatmeal Stout.

    Thank you guys.

  9. You’re welcome Steve. Thanks for the updates.
