The hobby of homebrewing beer

Saison First Tasting

After two weeks in the bottle, I decided to try out the saison.

I could see some yeast had clumped up and had collected itself on the side of the bottle.  I also saw a thin layer of yeast floating at the top.

At least, I was hoping it was yeast and not some stringy bacteria.

I poured the beer into a pint glass because I don’t have any fancy goblets or chalices.  It has a lighter color than I thought it would be.  More golden than orange and a bit hazy (although looking at the pictures, it looks darker 🙂 ).  The head is white and foamy.

The aroma was filled with phenolic overtones, some bitter spice, and a little fruit sweetness.

The taste has a few things going on.  The tiny bubbles dance all over the place.  I get some tangy fruit along with some peppery spicy bitterness.  Towards the end, you sense some graininess and then it finishes dry with some hoppy aftertaste.

The head laces nicely down the side of the glass.  Not that familiar with the style, but it similar to a Hennepin.

Do you have a wine glass? That works for the chalice-y beers. We’d all love to be drinking our homebrew out of our enemies’ skulls, but sometimes we might need to settle for one of the wife’s wine glasses.
