Cooler Mash Tun Conversion

UPS delivered my shipment from Northern Brewer on time yesterday.  I got the spigot and the screen and installed them into the cooler.  Here are some pictures of the process.

The spigot was installed with no problems.  I tested it for leaks and none were found.

The mash screen was a bit too long for the bottom of my 5 gallon cooler.  I bent it a bit to make it fit.

Planning a date to brew this month to test out the new set up.  Should be good.

You should post some kind of step by step. I am very interested in how all grain compares to an extract brew. I have been thinking about brewing an all grain for a while.

    Good luck!

I used Northern Brewer’s cooler kit for a 36 quart rectangular Coleman. I kicked myself for not doing sooner. You will love it.

  4. I did the same as ol’ Hopshead–I batch sparge with this kit in a rectangular. I think mine is 40 qts though. It’s awesome. I get 78-84% efficiency, and never a stuck sparge.

  5. Looks great. Hint: when testing for leaks make sure the water you use is at the temp you will be regularly mashing with. I used cold when testing (no leaks) but found a leak during my mashing. Good Luck & have fun!

  6. grrr123: Yep, Mike is already on board to help me document my first all grain brew session. We will post all the step by steps and the details once we have them.

Marcus: Good tip. I will try it again with 150 degree water and see what happens!

  7. All grain is the way to go–it lengthens your brew day, but it cuts your cost in half, and gives you so much more control over the finished product.
