The start of a new year can give one time to pause and set some plans for the next 12 months.
For 2010, my goals are as follows:
- Brew 3 styles that I have never brewed before. That goal should be pretty easy to meet.
- Brew my APA again to test if I can brew with consistency.
- Smooth out all the issues in my all grain system – looking for not stuck sparges in 2010.
That’s about it. I am going to keep things simple. Keeping these resolutions should be easy.

I failed for the second year in a row to fulfil my goal of an annual New Year’s Day barleywine tradition.
I recently brewed 3 successive batches of the same concept to refine the recipe. It was a very interesting experience. I think I’ve got it now, but I was considering abandoning the way I was approaching the grain bill before the third batch came out right, and I’m halfway tempted to brew a batch using the other approach I had in mind to see how it compares.
I’ve only had one stuck sparge… it was a pilsner with a pound of rice. It really wasn’t nearly the problem to deal with that I thought they would be, maybe because mine didn’t totally stick, it just got real, real slow, and after the first vorlauf, everything went fine.
