Bohemian Pilsner Preparation – Sanitation

With the Better Bottle cleaned, it was time to sanitize.  I think we have written on this blog a number of times about the awesomeness of StarSan.  If you don’t believe me, buy a small bottle and try it out.

I can tell you that I was put off by the price of the sanitizer when I first started brewing, but after having some failed beers using a bleach solution and Iodophor (I never felt confident with the ratios and a few contaminated beers didn’t help matters) I bought some StarSan and never looked back.  For it’s effectiveness, it’s worth the price.

Having a measuring tool built into the bottle so you can get the right amount of StarSan for a 5 gallon carboy filled with water is handy as well.  No more guessing – a simple squeeze into the reservoir and a pour into the carboy and you’re done.

I am going to let this Better Bottle sit overnight and let the sanitizer sanitize.  It probably won’t take that long but I have always had good luck letting it sit for extended periods of time.

Next up is the mighty yeast starter.

  1. I’ve used this before, works like a charm.

    StarSan is a contact sanitizer.
No need to make a 5G solution to sanitize a 5G carboy.

One quart is more than enough to splash…coat…and sanitize a carboy / bucket. Decant the solution and use it again and again at a later date.

  3. Thanks Herb. Yeah, I overdo it but the process works for me. I should try to use just a quart once I work out the calculation of StarSan to a quart of water.

  4. You don’t even need a quart. Just fill a spray bottle with distilled water and spray on the surface to be sanitized. Makes the Star San last forever.
