Continuing my brew log for the Maibock lager brew….
The ingredients are pretty simple and I think that’s perfect for this attempt.
I am buying 10.5 lbs. of Pilsner Malt and 5.5 lbs. of Munich Malt.
I am also going to get a half ounce of Magnum hops. One hop addition at 60 minutes to go in the boil is pretty sweet too.
If I can get White Labs WLP833 – German Bock Lager Yeast, I will. If not, I will settle for the WLP830 – German Lager Yeast.
I will probably buy 3 vials of the stuff and make a pretty big starter.
I don’t have a brew date targeted yet. I need to figure that out with the holidays coming up.

What’s the reasoning behind 3 vials just to do a starter? Sorry to sound negative….but that seems like 14 bucks that could be better spent elsewhere. I think one would do it unless you are doing a huge batch.
John
No negativity taken. I have been reading Brewing Classic Styles and for the Maibock recipe they have in that book, they recommend using 5(!) vials of liquid yeast for the recipe.
I am thinking I can buy 3 and make a hefty starter for the batch.
I think a good fermentation is the key to making a great lager. Not sure if I am overdoing it or not, but I haven’t authored a book or won any awards for homebrewing either.

First time to the sight, love it. Is this recipe for a 5 gallon batch?
John
