I’m getting great beers with extract + grains. I have no desire to move to all-grain blah blah blah. I may do the occasional partial mash – but I’m having fun and brewing great beers. Done

In my quest for more and more complicated learning experiences, I decided after about 4 batches to try partial-mash brews, and have now completed several successfully. My first full-mash batch is almost done with the secondary fermentation and ready to be bottled.

For those of you partial-mashers who don’t want to make the additional investment in equipment for full-mashing, try this: full mash a half-batch. This is what I do and I can do it with mostly the same equipment required for partial-mash, 5-gallon batches. An added advantage of half-batch brews is that you can easily try out new recipes without a hug investment in ingredients and potentially being stuck with 5 gallons of “epic failure ale”.

I’ve been doing partial mash from the start (just over a year). Reviewing the process, it looks like all-grain would be fewer steps, but more time-consuming. I hope to have an all-grain setup going by the summer.

This will be my first all grain brew after about 5 extracts I know it will take more time more work yadayadayada I really dont care I want great beer if I wanted just ok beer I would just go to albertsons and pick up some generic beer! The whole reason I started hombrewing was because I wanted the best beer I could get my hands on and exotic flavors I dont see a better way of doing this than all grain thats gettn right back to the root of beer thats how its started all grain sure you could make a good extract but you are just limiting yourself in your options. maybe I am putting my foot in my mouth Ill see how my beer turns out but I can tell you one thing if it sucks Iam going to try again great beer wasnt made overnight I think it really is an art thats why they are called brew masters! You have to learn it labor for it you think she was ust going to lift her skirt up and let you in Pfffff! you gotta earn that buddy she gonna reject you a few times before you hit a home run im not giving up yet I know a perfect beer is just around the corner!

I currently extract brew, but only because I haven’t made the investment to learn how to do all-grain yet. I would imagine by next year I’ll be doing all-grain. It’s definitely a goal.

I often think for time issues, that extract would be easier.
But then I look at the cost of an extract batch vs. all-grain and I worry about the monitary cost over time.

I only use extract, it’s a time thing with me. When I retire I might go larger scale and then it will be the real deal.
